John Gilkey Update: Open Letter to Dealers in the Collectibles Trades - The Fine Books Blog

ABAA security chair John Waite has forwarded this Gilkey update/request from Inspector Jeff Levin of the SFPD. Please feel free to forward and/or repost.

Earlier this month convicted fraudster and thief John Charles Gilkey of California was arrested for a parole violation stemming from a series of incidents in San Francisco late last year. Now that he has been re-apprehended, he will be brought up again on charges either later this month or next in San Francisco.

A career criminal, Mr. Gilkey has a long record of defrauding rare book and autograph dealers and dealers in other collectibles, with the use of stolen credit card numbers or with bad checks. His first arrest goes back more than a decade to the 1990s when he was brought up on charges for passing bad checks. He was arrested and jailed for credit card fraud in 2003, then released on parole less than two years later. In autumn 2010 he was arrested again after threatening to burn down a San Francisco print gallery after the manager declined a sale. Mr. Gilkey posted a bail bond for $75,000.00 and subsequently disappeared.

There is ample evidence that between last November and his arrest this month, John Charles Gilkey continued to defraud a number of dealers in collectibles, including a Maryland comic book dealer. San Francisco Police have asked members of the collectibles trade to please forward to them any new information concerning fraudulent activity by Mr. Gilkey. His new bail and eventual sentencing largely will be influenced by the number of new crimes that can proved he has committed since he skipped bail.

Mr. Gilkey is reported to have a storage unit containing rare books, autographs, prints, maps, stamps, comic books, Hollywood and film memorabilia, and coins. Many of these objects may have been obtained through fraud. However, police cannot obtain a search warrant of the storage unit until they provide a judge with a list of items that they are seeking. For that reason, it is imperative for dealers in all fields to come forward and provide police with information about any losses since the beginning of 2011, especially if John Charles Gilkey is known to have been the involved in the transaction. If the collectibles trades can provide police with a targeted list of stolen goods, then police will have a legal basis on which to execute a search warrant.

I love the cheesy cover art. That chick is ripped!

The book is actually pretty good. It made for an entertaining weekend and I will probably pick up other Alan Dean Foster paperbacks for vacation reading. Maybe I'll even read Alien. I liked the movie!

Just for the record, the cover art has NOTHING to do with the story inside.

"Updated" illustrations in this reissued version of one of my childhood favorites do not improve the story. Friso Henstra's vision of Petronella was strong and brave but also comely. I like my heroic women to be attractive and feminine. Little girls need to know they can be little girls, they do not have to be like boys to be as good as boys.

Mr. Williams probably would not approve of the androgynous look of his beloved Petronella.

In the summer he looked after his fields and saw to the haying or went for rides on his horse . . . "After all," he said, "I am the only one of me I have, and I have to take care of myself."

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Nevertheless, the doctor came.

"You're getting flabby," he said. "You ought to get more exercise."

The doctor orders Sir Philbert to go on an adventure to search for the emperor's daughter.

Sir Philbert kills the giant with flying blankets; scares the cockatrice with a mirror and an enchanter with determination. He gets the girl not because he is especially brave but because is extraordinarily resourceful.

I would expect nothing less than a common sense hero from Mr. Jay Williams!

He tries crowing like the rooster, jumping gleefully on his master like the dog and curling up on the lap of his mistress like the cat. These actions just seemed to make the farmer's upset . . . so he climbs up on the roof to die; "that will teach them" he thinks . . .

A story to remind us to show love and receive love. If you don't a donkey might climb up on your roof don't take them for granted.

The illustrations in this book are so sweet my 16 year old daughter said "Awww" at least six times will paging through.

An excellent example of why this blog is so unfocused!

I do not collect non-fiction, I have no interest Lincolnania, and my collecting years are 60's, 70's and 80's . . . but here I am, posting about a non-fiction (if not embellished), biography about Abraham Lincoln from 1958!

The writing in this book is Pollyannaish and contrived. I can remember writing book reports from these types of biographies. Skimming through to find just enough "facts" to make it look like I read the book. Ugh!

Admittedly, the illustrations are equally one-sided in their obvious devotion to this historical figure but where the author failed, the illustrator drew me in.

The kind eyes, the whimsical situations, the craggy face; I want to know more about the person in these illustrations. Isn't that the point of children's illustrations? To make me want to know more? To be enchanted? Maybe I'm not so far off focus after all.

This delightful show takes a look at the charming work of thirteen children’s book illustrators from the Netherlands, organized by the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts. Using simple lines and spare use of color, Dick Bruna places his beloved rabbit, Miffy, in a museum, checking out a Mondrian painting. Fiep Westendorp’s silhouetted Jip and Janneke are about to be pummeled by a huge wave from THE BEACH. Max Velthuijs’s Frog, Duck, Hare, and Pig frolic in a lush green landscape. Friso Henstra’s funny, frantic characters from MIGHTY MIZZLING MOUSE are part Monty Python, part Maurice Sendak, part YELLOW SUBMARINE. Jan Jutte draws a crudely smiling sun hovering over a sleeping elephant in GET UP! Ceseli Josephus Jitta’s GRANDFATHER’S DIAMOND is Hopper-esque, injecting a bit of realism into the cartoon world. Hans de Beer adds an endearingly scary quality to ALEXANDER THE GREAT in "Whenever the cat mother slept..." Thé Tjong-Khing’s LITTLE SOPHIE AND LANKY FLOP is gothically Gorey-esque, while "Nuns and children in the dormitory," from THE BOYS’ MARVELLOUS JOURNEY, is no walk in the park for these kids. The main character in Annemarie van Haeringen’s THE PRINCESS WITH THE LONG HAIR sits in a colorful Robert Smithson-like red landscape. Philip Hopman fills such illustrations as "Table be covered" from ALL GRIMM’S FAIRYTALES with bright colors and lots of detail. There are also pieces by Sylvia Weve, Yvonee Jagtenberg, and Dieter and Ingrid Schubert and five framed posters from exhibits held at the Eric Carle Museum. Be sure to pick up the excellent accompanying pamphlet, which includes an artist’s statement and full-color page from each illustrator. (I WANT THIS!)

My next purchase will be a nice looking edition with a dust jacket and cloth boards I found on Biblio (note to family - this is a hint!)

This is one of my latest acquisitions and I'm SO excited. I checked this book out of the school library so many times they should have given it to me!

The Cookie Tree is all about taking life at face value. Don't sweat the small stuff. Enjoy the gifts you receive and don't second guess everything. It is about eating the cookies because cookies are for EATING!

A cookie tree appears in the center of town. The kids want to eat the cookies but the adults come up with one reason after another for why the tree has appeared -- none good. Finally the kids just run out and eat the cookies. Then the tree disappears. Because the cookies were for eating! Imagine that!

The National Geographic Society (Washington, DC) published School Bulletins weekly (during the school year) from 1919 to 1975!

I can remember looking forward to School Bulletin day because it was such a welcome break from regular studies.
